Yard Sale Fundraiser Tips

Hold a Yard Sale, Help Cure GM1. Shoppers browsing tables at a Cure GM1 yard sale fundraiser

A yard sale is one of the easiest ways to raise money for GM1 research. Clear out the garage, invite the neighbors, and turn gently used items into hope for children with GM1 gangliosidosis.

A very special thank you to one of our most dedicated supporters, Melinda Habingreither, for sharing these tips on how to hold a successful yard sale fundraiser.

When to hold your sale

Anytime works! Spring, summer, and fall are great for a classic yard sale, and you can sell online on sites like Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and Craigslist all year long.

Tips for a successful sale

  1. Tell everyone it’s a fundraiser. Advertise as much as possible, and share the story of your child or loved one. People are more likely to support an event for a family they know.
  2. Make it a multi-family sale. Ask friends and family to donate items to sell. Items from many households add variety, and buyers are drawn to multi-family sales.
  3. Sell the leftovers online. Post your nicer unsold items on Facebook Marketplace, a neighborhood buy/sell/trade group, or eBay.
  4. Line up help early. Don’t underestimate how much work a sale is. Ask friends and family to help sort, price, and sell from start to finish.
  5. Plan for what’s left. Find a group willing to pick up the rest. Churches and the Salvation Army will often collect remaining items for their own charity sales.
  6. Remember that every bit matters. Any amount raised is money that wasn’t available before. This isn’t a contest, and results will vary with your location, inventory, and more. With enough drops in the bucket, the bucket will eventually be full.

Send in your proceeds

When your sale wraps up, you can donate the proceeds online. Looking for your next idea? Explore more ways to fundraise for Cure GM1.
